EXECUTIVE & BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

June 5, 2023 @ 10:00 am – MINUTES
Zion United Church, 368 Miller Street, Pembroke

Present: Cathy Hugli, Pam Duplessis, Ellen Vandersleen, Larry TerMarsch, Sue Walton, Grace Rozeboom, Janet Schultze-Jones, Hugh Schooley, Peter Wegner, Grace McLaughlin, Ellen Mooney, Catherine Arends, Rosalie Laird

Cathy H. welcomed the group at 10:10 am. Cathy moved approval of the Agenda, seconded by Ellen V.. Carried

Minutes: Moved by Pam. that May 1, 2023 Executive meeting minutes be approved with one change (City Recreation Manager’s name is Jordan Durocher), seconded by Ellen V. Carried.

Membership – Pam reported 60 memberships have been paid for 2023, including 11 Corporate. Will check into a window sticker for Corporate members for next year to replace current certificate.

Summer students: Erin Koch started working with Jenny on May 23. Still in process to recruit an Arboretum Gardener Assistant to start this month – surprising lack of applications is an issue.

Financial Report: Larry T. shared a copy of the financial statement at May 31, 2023

  • Plant sale proceeds up to $3922.45
  • Motion to approve report made by Larry, seconded by Catherine A. Carried.

Community Clean-up: Saturday, June 10, 2023 – meet at the marina at 9:00 am

Paul Martin Drive: Clean-up continuing tomorrow at 9:00 am. Bring tools and dress appropriately as tick season is upon us. Also be aware that there is a turtle habitat along the river.

100th Anniversary Celebration

  • Ellen provided information about prices/details from the Germania Club, Clarion Hotel, Curling Club and Kiwanis Field House. After discussion, there was agreement that in 2024, we would plan for an Anniversary Gala (and no Christmas Banquet). Ellen will speak to the Pembroke Legion about potential dates for 2024.
  • Potential other events to take place at the Arboretum and Pansy Patch Park will also be considered.
  • Pam will speak to Play It Again Sports about ordering hats
  • Larry will look into prices for a tent
  • Ellen and Cathy will speak to the City about a banner
  • 100 trees project (red maple, sugar maple) – should be cost sharing with buyers – Hugh will work with Terry
  • Event Committee volunteers include Ellen V, Cathy H, Pam D, Catherine A, Grace M.

Plant Sale – Saturday, May 20, 2023

  • Grace provided an updated report to add more names of donors of plants.

Downtown Issues

  • Cathy will speak to Bethea at the PBIA about the large planter across from the Library, which needs weeding
  • Ross Hugli will be asked to consult on suitable plants for the East Side Mario bed on Mackay Street
  • As there are still 10 bridge boxes and 2 planters not paid for, it was agreed to share the information on Facebook.

Pansy Patch Park

  • Ellen has another tarp to place on the Japanese Knotweed patch – Peter and Cathy agreed to help on Thursday, June 8 @ 9:00 am.

Garden Tour – planned for Wednesday, July 26 with tours at the homes of Nancy Denault, Maurene Stencill and Barbara Blackstein with a picnic lunch at the Pembroke Waterfront. It was agreed that each host will be given a $25.00 Sunset Nursery gift card. Meet at Zion United parking lot at 9:00 am. Pam will bring membership and waiver forms.

Rhubarb Leaf Workshop

Thanks to Ellen for hosting this fun activity and to Hugh for teaching us the process.

OHA Convention: July 21 – 23, 2023 Brookstreet Hotel, Ottawa

  • Cathy Hugli, Ellen Vandersleen, Sue Walton. Grace McLaughlin. Pam Duplessis, Charlotte Hugli and Hugh Schooley plan to attend.

Harvey Fraser Bursary recipient for 2023 is Alice Gould from Valor High School, who will be attending Lakeland College. Larry will prepare and deliver the cheque.

Pansy Post – a reminder about renewing membership will go with the June Pansy Post. Costs are rising to mail copies to former members, and it was agreed that this issue would be the last one mailed to non-members.

Next Executive Meeting: Monday, August 14 , 2023 @ 10:00 am at the Pembroke Waterfront. Please bring your lunch.
